The Lucky Seven gazed at the floor, the ceiling, outside, at anything other than looking Chambers directly in the eye. Even Mahoney appeared shaken.

“Buck, Deuce, Finch, and myself will go as prisoners. The rest of you will stay behind with Garcia.”

Deuce paced in front of the tractor, his cigar rolling between his fingers. “Odds are hundred to one against us.” He stopped abruptly. “No, thousand to one. We’re digging our own graves if we go anywhere near that Nazi base camp.”

“Nobody’s dying,” Chambers said.

“Yeah!” Deuce’s voice switched to James Cagney. “Tell that to the other forty GIs who started this harebrained mission.”

“All right, enough bitching, Deuce,” Mahoney whispered, looking back over his shoulder. “This is just another recon job, same shit, different day. So everybody put on your game face and listen to your lieutenant.”

“Hang tough, guys,” Chambers said. “We’ll get through this like we always do.”

“We’re not only getting through this, we’re gonna change the fucking course of history.” Fallon emerged from the shadows fully decked in an SS lieutenant’s uniform. Next followed Moose, Fox, and Snake dressed in black and loaded down with weapons. They stood behind Fallon like henchmen.

Captain Wolf followed in tow, sharply dressed as an SS captain, complete with an officer’s cap and three Iron Crosses on his chest. A black strap hung across his chest, a leather satchel resting at his hip. “Get your gear on, men. We move out in five.”

The Lucky Seven threw on helmets and parkas. Goldstein pulled Chambers aside. “Sir, I feel like I should be going with you.”

Chambers smiled. “I need you to remain here, Chaplain. Look after Garcia. Mahoney and Hoffer will keep you company.”

“Why do they get to stay behind?” Deuce asked. “How about I stay and you take Hoffer instead?”

“Yeah, let me go.” Hoffer’s eyes pleaded with him. “You can’t attack the Nazi lair without the Shadow.”

“This is no comic book, Hoffer.”

“I know it’s dangerous, but I want to help.”

“All right, Hoff, gear up. Papa Bear, Deuce, there’s a lot of materials in this barn. Find a way to make a stretcher.”

Mahoney nodded. “We’ll have it ready when you return.”

“Deuce, this isn’t a time to play poker.”

“Thank you, sir.” The Poker King shook hands with Buck, Finch, and Hoffer. “Good luck, fellas. Everybody lives, okay?”

“Everybody lives,” the Lucky Seven repeated.

Fallon peered out the barn doors. “Storm’s finally passing.”

“Let me tell you something, men.” Wolf stepped in the center of the group, looking each man in the eye. “When we pull this off, it will be a huge strategic win for the Allied forces. President Roosevelt will know your name. All I ask is that you bring your belief in success of all your previous missions to this one. We get through this and I promise every one of you gets to go home a hero. Are you with me?”

“Yes, sir,” the group chanted in unison.

Chambers studied his men. Maybe we can pull this off. His hand felt the thick unopened letter inside his jacket. And maybe, just maybe, a lovely English nurse will be waiting for me in Notting Hill.
